and Martha Jane Harlow
Andrew Brown Koontz was born May 16, 1827, in Nicholas Co., [West] Virginia, son of Alexander Koontz and Susan Martin [See Source Records below]. Alexander and Susan were married October 30, 1820, in Nicholas County. Andrew was married April 28, 1847, to Martha Jane Harlow, who was born about 1827 in Virginia, probably Albemarle County, daughter of Nicholas Harlow and Jeanetta Bridgwater. The marriage was performed by Rev. John F. Clark at the Heath Creek Baptist Church in Cooper Co., Missouri.
Andrew and Martha were living in Hopkins Co., Texas, in 1850.They moved there not long after the birth of their first child. Andrew was primarily engaged in farming the 160 acres he received by patent from the Texas government in 1857. Andy and Mattie remained in Hopkins County for many years and raised a large family. Andy was farming successfully but, like so many, his progress was affected by the Civil War. The value of his personal and real property in 1860 was $5,100, a fair sum for the times. After the war and by the next census in 1870, his estate was valued at $3,900.
Andrew suffered from bronchitis the last two years of his life. He died May 14, 1912, in Wood Co., Texas, and was buried the following day near his homestead.
